העולם הספורטיבי התייצב ביממה האחרונה בגל סולידריות נרחב בעקבות הפיגוע האנטישמי הרצחני בסידני, שבו נרצחו לפחות 15 יהודים במהלך חגיגות חנוכה. מועדוני פאר מענפי הכדורגל והכדורסל השתמשו בבמות הרשמיות שלהם כדי לשלוח תנחומים ולהביע הזדהות עם הקהילות היהודיות.
הפיגוע, הקשה ביותר שידעה אוסטרליה זה כ־30 שנה, התרחש על רקע גל אנטישמיות מתמשך מאז 7 באוקטובר והפך ערב חג לאסון כבד, כזה שטלטל לא רק את אוסטרליה אלא קהילות יהודיות ברחבי העולם.
טוטנהאם הייתה בין הראשונות להגיב והדגישה כי איחולי "חנוכה שמח" מרגישים חלולים ברגעים כאלה, אך הזכירה את משמעות החג, מציאת אור בתוך החושך,והצהירה על עמידה לצד הקהילות היהודיות. גם שיקגו בולס וצ'לסי הצטרפו עם מסרים ברורים של הזדהות ותמיכה. אפילו מנצ'סטר סיטי פרסמה הודעה רשמית ומכובדת, שהבהירה את עמדתה לצד אוהדיה היהודים.
מי שבלטה במיוחד הייתה ורדר ברמן, שממשיכה בקו הישיר והחד שלה מאז ה-7 באוקטובר. המועדון הגרמני גינה את הטבח ובמהלך המשחק מול שטוטגרט אף הונף שלט: "הגלובליזציה של האינתיפאדה פירושה הרג יהודים. סולידריות עם סידני".
